0.40 Ct. Purple Spinel

This transparent purple spinel is presented as a precisely cut 0.40 carat oval, with exact dimensions of 5.14 millimeters by 3.84 millimeters by 2.67 millimeters, maintained in a mixed brilliant faceting scheme, graded as very slightly included when evaluated at eye level, carrying an intense color intensity and an excellent polish, originating from Ceylon Sri Lanka, and importantly supplied by us, with no enhancement. The mixed brilliant cut here combines a brilliant facet arrangement on the crown with a controlled pavilion design, allowing for optimized retention of weight while delivering dynamic light return, the oval shape gives a refined length to width ratio of approximately 1.34, a ratio that preserves a balanced face up appearance without elongating or squaring the visual profile, the depth of the stone calculates to about 59.5 percent of the average diameter, a proportion that supports a strong central flash and even distribution of color across the table, the excellent polish is evident in crisp facet junctions and smooth facet planes, which collectively minimize surface light leakage and maximize scintillation under variable lighting. Examined under loupe or microscope, the stone displays only minimal internal features, these very slight inclusions are localized and do not interrupt the overall transparency or the pathway of light through the pavilion, the result is a gem that reads clean to the eye and that exhibits uninterrupted brilliance, the mixed brilliant facet architecture has been executed to deliver small high contrast facets adjacent to larger bright facets, this arrangement increases return of white light as lively flashes while maintaining color saturation, the facet symmetry supports even light dispersion across the table and shoulders, the well controlled pavilion angles reduce light leakage along the girdle and intensify the perceived depth of the purple hue, the girdle and culet proportions have been finished to practical tolerances, enabling secure setting with minimal risk of facet damage during mounting. From an optical and material science perspective spinel presents distinct advantages that explain why this purple example stands out compared to more common gemstones, spinel is singly refractive and isotropic with a refractive index from approximately 1.712 to 1.718 and a modest dispersion of approximately 0.018, these values place it above quartz and amethyst in light return and crispness, yet below diamond in fire, however the single refractivity of spinel produces unambiguous light pathways which paired with precise cutting yields a clean, lively brilliance without the optical doubling seen in doubly refractive stones, compared to corundum based sapphires which are dichroic and can display pleochroic color shifts, this Ceylon spinel presents an even, intense violet purple face up color without competing color flashes, when contrasted with tanzanite which can be trichroic and is commonly heat treated to stabilize hue, this spinel is unenhanced and exhibits inherent color stability and superior surface hardness at eight on the Mohs scale, this hardness improves resistance to abrasion in daily wear scenarios and helps preserve polished facet planes and crisp facet junctions over time. For the collector or designer considering mounting options, this 0.40 carat oval spinel is ideal as a focused center stone in a delicate ring, a minimalist pendant, or as a matched element in a bespoke earrings design, settings that allow light to enter the pavilion such as open prong or low bezel styles will enhance the controlled brilliance delivered by the mixed brilliant cut, selecting a white metal setting will emphasize the cool violet character while a warmer metal will introduce a subtle shift in perceived warmth, the natural origin and absence of enhancement increase the gemological value and appeal for informed buyers, cleaning is straightforward using warm soapy water and a soft brush, though standard care against hard knocks is recommended, for peace of mind we can provide provenance information and guidance on setting to preserve the stone integrity, this Ceylon purple spinel combines measured proportions, meticulous cutting, strong color saturation and excellent polish to offer a standout presence that competes with more familiar gem materials on the basis of color intensity, optical clarity and enduring wearability.
