0.83 Ct. Blue Spinel

This transparent blue spinel weighs zero point eight three carat and presents a classic oval outline with precise measurements of six point eight one millimeters by four point eight six millimeters by three point one one millimeters. The cutter employed a mixed brilliant faceting scheme, combining a brilliant style crown with a finely faceted pavilion, to maximize return of light within the constraints of a dark tone. The pavilion depth of three point one one millimeters relative to the mean diameter of five point eight three five millimeters produces an overall depth ratio of approximately fifty three percent, which supports balanced light return and stable face up appearance. Facet junctions are tight and symmetrical, the girdle runs to a consistent thickness for secure setting, and the oval outline exhibits controlled elongation without visual distortion, characteristics that reflect careful rough planning and economical weight retention. Color performance is defined by a dark color intensity with strong saturation and a cool to neutral blue hue that displays depth without veering to inky black in good lighting. The mixed brilliant architecture allows small flashes of scintillation to animate the table and crown facets, while the deep tone yields a velvety blue that reads as refined and substantial in jewelry applications. Clarity is graded as very very slightly included evaluated at eye level, indicating that the stone is essentially eye clean for most practical viewing conditions, with only minute internal characteristics that do not interrupt the visual field or compromise polish retention. The polish is excellent, producing crisp facet reflections and a smooth table surface that enhances apparent brilliance and resists surface wear when properly set. Provenance is Ceylon, Sri Lanka, a classic source for fine spinel material, and the specimen is natural with no enhancement declared. The absence of treatments preserves original crystal chemistry and optical properties, offering collectors and designers a stable and verifiable material. The cutter has respected the isotropic nature of spinel, orienting the stone for optimal symmetry rather than exploiting pleochroic axes that do not apply, and has conserved weight while retaining attractive dimensions for a variety of mounting styles. The result is a gem that combines geological authenticity with lapidary precision, suitable for use as a center stone in rings and pendants, or as an elegant accent in more complex designs. From a technical durability perspective, spinel ranks at hardness eight on the Mohs scale, delivering reliable resistance to everyday abrasion and scratching when compared to common jewelry stones. Spinel crystallizes in the isometric system and lacks true cleavage, which confers very good toughness and reduces susceptibility to chipping under incidental impact. These intrinsic properties, together with the robust mixed brilliant cutting and excellent polish, make this spinel particularly well suited to daily wear. For secure long term performance we recommend settings that protect the girdle and culet, such as a low bezel for very active wearers or four balanced prongs for a classic presentation, and routine cleaning with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Ultrasonic and steam cleaning are generally safe for natural, untreated spinel, but we advise final verification after mounting. This specimen is offered by us, and it embodies both technical quality and the enduring practicality required for jewelry designed for everyday wear.
