0.89 Ct. Purple Spinel

This transparent 0.89 carat cushion shape purple spinel presents as a compact, well balanced gem with exacting dimensions of 5.25 x 5.24 x 4.09 mm, executed in a mixed brilliant cut that combines a faceted crown arrangement optimized for scintillation with a pavilion designed to return maximum light to the table. The cutter has employed a proportionally modest table facet relative to the overall crown, creating controlled contrast and strong facet definition without significant windowing, while the pavilion facets terminate to a well centered culet area that supports good face up color saturation. Clarity has been evaluated as slightly included at eye level, with small pinpoint and minor crystal inclusions distributed principally toward the pavilion, their optical impact minimized by the mixed brilliant facet geometry and excellent polish. The polish quality is exceptional across faceted planes, producing crisp facet junctions and high facet transparency, which in combination with the gemological properties of spinel yields a lively return of white and colored light when viewed under both diffuse and direct illumination. From a material science and provenance perspective this spinel originates from Ceylon, Sri Lanka, a source historically noted for producing vibrant and well crystalline spinels with an inherently clean host matrix. The body color registers as a true purple with intense color intensity, exhibiting strong saturation and medium to slightly deep tone that reads uniformly through the crown and pavilion. As a spinel this specimen is isotropic and therefore devoid of pleochroism, which simplifies color presentation and ensures consistent appearance from multiple viewing angles. Its hardness registers at approximately 8 on the Mohs scale, conferring robust resistance to abrasion and making it suitable for everyday jewelry applications when properly set. Critically for collectors and technically minded buyers, this stone is natural and untreated, no enhancement has been applied, which preserves both its intrinsic material value and its long term stability against fading or alteration under standard wear conditions. From an investment perspective the combination of proven Ceylon origin, intense untreated purple color, meticulous mixed brilliant cutting and excellent polish positions this 0.89 carat cushion spinel as an attractive asset within the colored gemstone market. Supply of fine, untreated spinel of distinctive color is limited relative to commonly traded gems, and market interest in spinel as a collector and investor class has increased as informed buyers seek alternatives to crowded categories. Key drivers for future appreciation include rarity of untreated material with intense color, documentation of origin and treatment status, superior cutting quality that maximizes face up color and brilliance, and global demand trends among collectors and high end jewelers. While size is a consideration with per carat pricing increasingly favorable above the one carat threshold, the exceptional color and cut of this stone support a premium relative to average market examples in the sub one carat range. For capital preservation and potential appreciation we recommend formal gemological documentation, periodic independent appraisal, insurance and provenance records. We provide source documentation and can assist with certification options and recommended mounting strategies to protect the gem and maintain marketability. For buyers who value technical quality, long term stability, and the prospect of value growth in a constrained supply environment, this Ceylon purple spinel represents a technically compelling and strategically sound acquisition.
