9.96 Ct. Peach Cabochon Moonstone

This specimen is a translucent oval peach moonstone weighing 9.96 carats, with precise dimensions of 16.19 x 11.94 x 6.73 mm, presented in a classic cabochon cut. The cabochon form accentuates adularescence, the internal schiller produced by microscopic lamellar intergrowths of orthoclase and albite, and this example exhibits a soft, directional sheen that moves smoothly across the dome as the stone is oriented to light. Clarity is graded as very slightly included at eye level, indicating that any internal features are minor and do not interrupt the overall visual field of the gem, they are consistent with natural feldspar growth and contribute to the lived character of the material rather than detracting from it. Color is rendered as medium intensity peach, an even saturation across the surface that balances well with the adularescent flash, and the translucent body allows light to penetrate sufficiently to reveal depth of tone while preserving the ethereal glow characteristic of fine moonstone. Origin is Ceylon Sri Lanka, a source known for clean crystal structure and refined adularescent phenomena, and there are no enhancements, which means the color and luster are entirely natural, an important attribute for collectors and connoisseurs who value untreated material. The lapidary execution demonstrates considered craftsmanship, starting with preforming to align the stone so that the lamellar planes parallel to the dome optimize adularescence, followed by progressive grinding through successively finer abrasives to establish a symmetrical oval outline and an even, well proportioned dome height that supports a broad, uninterrupted sheen. The polish is excellent, the final lap using a fine abrasive such as cerium oxide or tin oxide applied judiciously to remove minor surface reflection layers, resulting in a smooth, mirror like finish that enhances visual clarity and the movement of light. The cabochon displays consistent symmetry, with balanced termination at the girdle and a clean, even profile from crown to base, which indicates precise control of material removal and thermal management during cutting to avoid micro fractures. Because moonstone is a feldspar with a Mohs hardness in the 6 to 6.5 range and perfect cleavage in two directions, the cutting and finishing process requires experienced hands to minimize tension and avoid cleavage planes, and this piece shows the benefits of that discipline. For setting, the combination of an even dome and modest depth suggests a bezel or low profile prong setting that secures the girdle and protects vulnerable edges, while allowing the adularescence to play unobstructed, and the absence of enhancements simplifies appraisal and provenance documentation for future custodians. As an heirloom piece this 9.96 carat peach moonstone is inherently suited to generational transfer for several reasons. The natural origin, lack of enhancement, and documented dimensions and clarity form a durable provenance record when accompanied by professional imaging and a gemological report, and we will provide detailed documentation that links the physical attributes of the stone to its origin, treatment status, and cutting notes, all of which are important for long term value retention. From a design perspective, choosing a setting that prioritizes protection and timeless aesthetics will ensure that the gem survives active wear, a bezel in 18 karat yellow or rose gold, or a gallery set platinum mount with protective shoulders, will reduce the risk of chip or cleavage damage, while classic, restrained design language ensures style longevity across fashion cycles. Routine care recommendations include gentle cleaning with warm soapy water and a soft brush, avoiding ultrasonic cleaners and harsh chemicals that can exacerbate cleavage related fracture propagation, and storing the gem separately in a padded compartment to prevent abrasion, these measures, combined with periodic professional inspections and reproofing of the mount, will preserve both appearance and structural integrity. Beyond physical preservation, cultivating the story of the gem contributes to its heirloom value, recording the circumstances of acquisition, the cutter s approach to orienting the lamellae for optimal adularescence, and the choice of setting and artisan for fabrication, these narrative elements transform the stone from a precious object into a family artifact. We recommend commissioning a bespoke setting by a bench jeweler experienced with softer gemstones, including options for interchangeable mounts or modular designs that allow the stone to be reused in different settings across decades. Insurance appraisal, high resolution photographs, and periodic reissue of documentation will maintain marketability for future generations, and when care, professional stewardship, and a considered design are combined with the natural, untreated character and Ceylon provenance of this peach moonstone, the result is a piece that is both materially exceptional and emotionally resonant, a true heirloom capable of being passed down with confidence and pride.
